your efforts, some will not. Try to connect with ADAPT members in your
local area. Also look for copies of disAbility magazines such as Mouth.
The fact is that it is certainly something that can be done, that there
as people around who have done it and will provide advice and direct
assistance if necessary. In one well known case, an individual was
spirited out of a nursing home in Oklahoma by his friends and is now
living independently in Pittsburgh, PA.
ANSWER: First of all, please reframe from refering to the disabled as
"special"... We're the same as anyone else...
As for the nursing home, (prision for the helpless I call them) he/she
is trapped in; untill something better is found, check on this person
often and very the times you visit so the staff will never know when
you might pop in!
Look in your phone book for your local office of United Cerebral Palsy
and Volunteers Of America; call and see if eather group offers any
type of assissted living programs, VOA is better about providing
housing then UCP sadly to say!
And even if these groups cannot help, you need to make the problem
cleat to them and that something must be done!
You are correct, the young disabled, (and for that matter no law
abiding human being) should EVER be put in these prisions to rot and
their talents be allowed to waiste!
