Assissted Living Information

QUESTION:

My elderly mother has slowly declined since father died. I moved her from her apartment an hour away from me, to just 5 miles away, take care of all her needs, buy her groceries, my sister does her laundry, see here EVERY day that I'm off of work, and call her every day that I work.
She has Home Health, RN, NA, and PT.She has CHF, MI, AF, SSS, SVT, PVCs, MVP, AODM, Temporal Lobe Arteritis, Glaucoma, ulcers, hx of breast cancer, mastectomoy, dual chamber pacemaker, etc.She can use a walker, slightly, but to go the the store, she needs her wheelchair. She has been hospitalized 6 times this year.
Last Monday, her Home Health nurse found her screaming "Help me!" She was prone, in the bathroom, having fallen. Hypothermic at 92.0 degrees F, 60/40 BP, cyanotic, in renal failure with anuria, elevated S-T segment and T-waves, confused, and shortly afterward, once in ICU, almost comatose.
It's nursing home time. Doctor says, I agree, she doesn't.
How does one cope? "No one cares about me!" "I've no where to go!" Etc.
Of course, I can't cope as a nurse. I'm not objective. Anyone else been through this, and got any suggestions?

ANSWER:

Tell her the time has come; she cared for you when you needed it, now you must care for her. Tell her it is your home or the nursing home. In other words, give her a negative choice, but a choice. Her room can be fixed with her things, and you can keep a closer watch. It will improve the quality of her remaining years, put more of a burden on you, but it's your Mom.
Society in general will see more and more of this, as longevity increases.
Nurses, get a Long Term Care policy! The younger you buy it, the cheaper it is. Don't wait till you are up in years, the price is prohibitive.
