Are any of you living in retirement living communities?
QUESTION: Hello all! I'm doing some research on the pros and cons of retirement
living--more the independent/assisted living communities than nursing
homes. Are any of you living in retirement living communities? How old
were you when you entered it? What made you decide, and what makes you
happy or unhappy where you are? Thanks!
ANSWER: We have discussed this many times in the past, you might want to check out
previous threads on retirement. I have lived in an independent living community for four years. Actually,
these are just apartments with an age restriction..in my case age 55 and over.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area in the East Bay. I have greatly enjoyed
living in this community which offered a heated swimming pool and hottub, a
library, a clubhouse, outdoor driving range, Ping pong, billiards, shuffleboard
courts etc. We had an activities committee, computer club, singles club, poker
club, bingo, parties, etc.
More than anything else, when I was alone, I felt safe there. With 420
aparments with 2/3rds retired, there were many eyes to watch for anything out
the ordinary. There was a security guard in the evening.
Although I am leaving now to get married, I would again live in such a
community if I were alone.
