So would ($5000-$1500-$800) $2700 be a reasonable
deterimination of the "medical" portion of their Assisted Living Cost
expenses?
QUESTION: My aunt and uncle (no kids) just moved on doctors orders to
an assisted living home. They are 84 and 87 and there is no
question that they cannot live on their own any more.
Anyway, Uncle's pension is about $6000 per month and the
cost of the assisted living home is about $5000 per month.
What portion of this will be deductible? I would estimate,
that a similar apartment in that community would cost about $1500 per month if it did not have the assisted living (including all meals) additions. I would also estimate that
they would spend about $800 per month on food on their own.
So would ($5000-$1500-$800) $2700 be a reasonable
deterimination of the "medical" portion of their living
expenses? Or can they deduct the whole thing? Any guidance on the standard way of handling this would be
appreciated.
ANSWER: You need more than a rough estimate. Contact the home and
ask them for a breakdown of costs. Only actual medical
expenses can be deducted, unless the primary reason for
them being in the home is to receive medical care.
