Does anyone have any ideas aboutAssisted Living Dallas?
QUESTION: My Grandmother was diagnosed with AD in May of this year. We realized a
change in her behavior years ago but it went undiagnosed until May. My
grandfather has been the primary caregiver. Sunday she was admitted into the
hospital for a hernia when she undressed they realized what caused the
hernia....she was wearing 7 girdles....Needless to say she was the talk of
the hospital.... The nurses and doctor do not want my grandmother to go back home with my
grandfather....they think she is in the advanced stage of AD and are wanting
us to get her into a nursing home or Assisted living center ASAP. They do
have medicare and medicade..However we are told that they will not provide
any assistance unless she developes some non pre-existing condition that
needs to be medically treated.....My mother and I have searched ALL around
this area (dallas, Ft. Worth)....We have found a few that meet our standards
but they are around 95-120.00 a day....The one place we went and saw was 65
dollars a day...but I wouldn't have checked my dog in there...much less my
loved one... My grandfather does have savings...but it would be drained within 3 or 4
months of my grandmothers care...Is there any other financial support that
would help them? Are there any nursing homes\ Assisted Living centers that
would work off income? Any government subsides? I am astounded at the
prices....I know that nothing would be more better than to pay the price for
good care...but it would kill my grandfather.....there wouldn't be anything
left...... Does anyone have any ideas...help? I really appreciate all your help....
ANSWER: I'm a social worker in Texas (although I'm down in Austin). I think
a good place to start would be the Area Agency on Aging (ours is listed in
the business section of the yellow pages) and ask if they have a benefits
counsellor or a list of nursing homes/assisted living facilities in your
area. The benefits counsellor can look at their situation to see what they
qualify for. Texas' Medicaid does have a Spousal Impoverishment Program
that might allow your grandmother to qualify for Medicaid without having to
deplete the income and savings that your grandfather needs.
Also, call you local Alzheimer's Association -- they probably have a list of
facilities, also.
