QUESTION: I'm rapidly about to become a member of the sandwich generation, and wondered if
people out there have any comments/experience w/ assisted living centers. In
particular, Brookhaven in Lexington, or similar places in Wayland/Sudbury.
My folks need a place that allows dogs, but otherwise aren't terribly particular
Thanks -- and leads to web pages with ratings or something would be great too.
ANSWER: After dealing with assisting living and nursing homes several times
for elderly relations in the last 10 years a few comments. I know that
this is not the exact area - but I will toss this out anyway. I assume
that you have obtained the booklet that list all levels of care
centers in the state. We were happy with the Leland Home in Waltham. A smaller facility in
good clean shape. It was on lower priced size when I looked (at quite
a few) and they had rooms for 2 people. Another good place was the Cadbury Commons in Cambridge. I don't know if either took dogs though. Where ever you choose - read the contracts very carefully. Some of
their contracts can make you pay through end of month should the
resident vacate say on the second of the month. And they can get you
for a month rent AFTER your loved one is out of there. About 2 years
ago I emailed the Elder Affairs Committee at the State House about
this extra month charging and none of them responded. If possible check out potential places at odd hours unannounced to
really see what is going on. Somewhere on the State House website there is a "report card" of how
nursing homes rate. I don't know if assisted living facilities have
been added. Many people fail to realize that assisted living facilities are in
excess of 2k a month and no the "system" doesn't subsidize one for
assisted living. The system only subsidizes full blown nursing homes
which are in excess of 6k a month in this state.
