Are any of you living in retirement living communities in
Assisted Living Virginia?
QUESTION: Hello all! I'm doing some research on the pros and cons of retirement
living--more the independent/assisted living communities than nursing
homes. Are any of you living in retirement living communities? How old
were you when you entered it? What made you decide, and what makes you
happy or unhappy where you are? Big difference of course between independent and assisted living. I guess you
go to an assisted living place when you can't hack it anymore in the real
world. However, we have friends who are just itching to move to a retirement
community and we can't understand their preference at all. To each his own, we
just moved to a semi-rural area that is close to a small town, the neighbors
are friendly and include retired as well as families with young children.
That's the variety you won't get in a retirement community, which is why they
seems really boring to me. Since this is in West Virginia, it's almost heaven.
ANSWER: For me, living other than in my own apartment/home would be a last
resort if I could not longer fend for myself. You enjoy a semi-rural area, I enjoy living in New York City. I guess
both of us get the variety we need in our respective surroundings.
I really don't want to live with other elderly people, unless for some
reason I would have to. One of the advantages of living in New York as I grow older is that
I don't have to drive as there is excellent public transportation. So
I can get around without being dependent on others. And all shopping
and other services are within short walking distance from my
apartment. If one needs meals prepared and assistance close by, then an
assisted living community may be the best choice, although many
elderly do get by with having a home aid come in for some hours
a week. So I am not sure if the original poster in this thread was talking
about choices for people who are somewhat infirm, or ill, or for
those of us who have no disabilities that prevent us from living
by ourselves.
