QUESTION: My father has a form of dementia that is similiar to Alzheimer's. He
wandered off from his Fairview apartment this morning before 7 a.m.
He's been gone just over three hours. If you've seen a man matching this description, please contact Kim at 478-6137. 66 years old 5'11
220 pounds
Wearing a tan parka, black gloves, leather shoes.
Salt and pepper hair, more salt than pepper
Very friendly and sociable, but may be confused, thinking he's going
to work or going home. May be headed for Truro, has hitchhiked there
once before.
ANSWER: It does suck to go through this, I'm sure you see a lot of it in your work.
Eventually this thing with my dad will be ironed out, and he'll hopefully be
placed somewhere that will make us all happy. I really do feel that the system is more than a little fouled up though. It
really makes me wonder what is going to be the situation 20 years from now.
By then I probably won't be coping with jumping through the various
bureaucratic hoops to get my dad placed somewhere safe (God, I hope not!).
But Nova Scotia already has the oldest population in Canada. As all these
people age, many will require nursing home care or other options at some
point. The current system is not equipped to handle today's population,
there will have to be changes to accomodate all these people in the future.
