Who woulda guessed Keiro Nursing Home?

QUESTION:

Funny, outside of this newgroup, I flame greeks as much as as anynone else. Derogatory remarks about whorish behavior (men especially.), racially oriented clubs....etc. Here however, I find myself defending them. Who woulda guessed?
In defense of the greeks:
The greek system is built around this party-type mentality. The stereotypes we see are carried from "Animal House" "Revenge of the Nerds" type movies. However, as much as Asians are dissed in the media, so are greeks. The party side is shown, but the service side is not. The greek system helps many charities with their time and money. Gamma-Phi-Beta (My lil' sis's sorrority) has 2 fundraisers a year (that I know of) Song-fest, and Cut-a-Thon. Both functions raise int he neighborhood of $10,000.00 ffor charity. In order to charter a Greek Organization
(supposedly) the group can not show a positive profit at the end of the year. This means, if their fund-raisers(those not specifically for charity, like song-fest) do well, and cover costs of functions, the organization will donate excess money to local charities. My own fraternal organization (Asian Greek, not Greek) tried to have 2-3 service projects a month. Brothers in the chapter would donate their time for a weekend to charities(mostly Asian or Asian affiliated) Keiro Nursing home....Chi-B-K...etc. We have even won the most service oriented fraternity award 3 of the first 6 times it has been awarded(Asian greeks only) So as to those who have been flaming Greek organizations, Don't just notice the parties and problems, look at the whole picture. Thanks for listening

ANSWER:

I definitely agree that there is a big service side to Greek organizations. The Greek system where I was an undergrad certainly raised a _lot_ of money for charities. But do people _join_ frats/sororities in order to do public service? I guess my question was more like "_Why_ do people want to join the Greek system?" as opposed to actually asking about the merits of the Greek system.
