Nursing Home Information

QUESTION:

I have a client whose wife lived in a nursing home after she was diagnosed with alzheimers.Once a week, a doctor visited her, and others at the nursing home to check on their well being. Also, the nursing home staff made sure she was taking her medication.
Are these facts alone strong enough evidence of medical reason being the primary reason for her being in the the nursing home, for purposes of an itemized deduction for nursing home costs?

ANSWER:

If the client is in a "skilled nursing facility" and/or is otherwise there upon a doctor's order, you shouldn't have a problem deducting the entire cost including room and board.
(In my area, dedicated Alzheimer's facilities are generally considered to be SNFs and/or are part of a SNF.)
However, if this is an "assisted living" arrangement that does NOT require a doctor's order for admission, then I believe you are limited to deducting only those expenses that are medically related (generally excluding room and board). In that case, figuring out "what's what" could be a pain, especially if the billings are not well itemized.
