can I get a job in a nursing home but would prefer to work with children?

QUESTION:

I'm a nursing student and was wondering what kinda of jobs are avalible to me while in school. I'm a certified CNA. My classes are at a community college so their is not a hospital we always work at, it varies class to class. I know a can get a job in a nursing home but would prefer to work with children. Any ideas would be great.

ANSWER:

I can relate to trying to do both the work & school thing at the same time. If you are anywhere in the Portland, Oregon area, there is a long term care facility for children. There are very few in the country, but ask around.
Also, another suggestion: if the state you live in uses Certified Medication Aides, you may be able to challenge the state exam as long as you have had the content in school...Oregon requires a copy of the syllabus content and 2 clinical rotations in which you administer medications. I was in a 4 year program and so was able to work the last couple of years as a CMA and make more money, not to mention the fact that it was much easier on my body....I'm 36. Just a few options....hope this helps.
