QUESTION: Can you please help me? I work in a very small charity run nursing
home in Staffordshire. Like a few homes we have been losing money for
the past few years. The Voluntary Committee, who have say in all that
goes on, bar nursing, have decided to bring in a Management Consultancy
Firm to "help us run the home" for the next few months. Does anyone
have any experience of this happening where you work. Our care
assistants and senior nursing staff are all quite worried about what may
happen to this home.
This management consultancy firm have turned around a few nursing
homes but they have also not been able to save some.
we are a long standing home but not a purpose built unit and I know
that we will not meet some of the new care standards.
It seems pointless to me to keep it open, to have this exercise if
we are to close in the near future.
All replies to this plea gratefully received.
ANSWER: >Does anyone >have any experience of this happening where you work. Not specifically but plenty of "management consultants" who in
general are pretty pea brained souls fresh out of an MBA course or
unable to hold a real job down. They have a formulaic approach and
will have already written their final report (with spaces to fill in
the names). If you are a small home the recommendation will be to
close it. >This management consultancy firm have turned around a few nursing >homes but they have also not been able to save some. Do you really think someone can turn up at a nursing home and in a
few weeks "save it"? If it is big enough and modern enough to
already be viable they can fire crassly incompetent managers but if
the home is already moderately well run there is no magic formula.
If it's small and not in new type designed accommodation there is
only one outcome. >It seems pointless to me to keep it open, to have this exercise if >we are to close in the near future. You are correct, however it is simply a form of cowardice from the
trustees. Rather than trust their own judgement and that of their
own managers they bring in a bunch of cowboys who will dutifully
produce the report they are paid (a great deal of money) to write and
then the trustees suck their teeth and say "terribly sorry, not our
wish, but our consultants have said its got to close..."
