Senior Care Centers

QUESTION:

I was half seriously looking at a couple of assisted care franchises for seniors. Has anyone had any experience with this type of business, any of the national franchises? What to watch for, what to beware of when dealing with franchisors(sp) in general?

ANSWER:

I went through the spectrum of "assisted living" homes with my parents. The services range from providing all meals in a dining room all the way through assistance with bathing and diaper changing. (Thank G-d, for them, that my parents never got to that last step.) Some of these places are full of self-sufficient, sociable people. Others are full of people who have Alzheimer's. You will always find some mix of both. Some elderly folks are angry and sick to the point of violence and from time to time, need to be restrained. Retirement homes are a step between a healthy, enjoyable life, and either nursing homes (a total loss of all independence), or the last step between life and the great beyond.
There certainly are a lot of laws and regulations to deal with. Social workers, who work for hospitals and for Medicare, are very much clued-in to this type of thing. As a starting point, I suggest you have an informal talk with a social worker.
This is rather OT, but I must say it. When a person moves into a retirement home they pretty much leave everything and everyone behind. Its lonely, sad, and scary. I made it a point to visit my parents at least four or five times a week. I can almost count on one hand the number of other visitors I saw at those places. What a shame! As in, SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!! If you have loved ones in a retirement home, please set down what you are doing and make it a point to go and visit them right now.
